Decision Making – Why Thinking Isn’t Always Enough

Have you ever spent days, weeks or even months trying to make an important decision, only to feel more confused the longer you think about it?

We often believe that the best decisions come from analysing every possibility. Careful thinking has its place, yet research into the heart-brain connection suggests that our emotional state plays a far greater role in decision making than we realise.  Whether it’s about making a big decision that is life changing, or a small decision in the moment - confusion and overwhelm can lead to stress and nervous system dysregulation.

When we feel stressed, anxious or overwhelmed, the brain naturally narrows its focus. We may begin to overthink, imagine worst-case scenarios, feel lost in the detail and lose touch with our natural creativity and intuition. Decisions made from this state can leave us wondering afterwards whether we chose the right path.

The Heart and Brain Work Together

One of the most fascinating things I learned, when I trained with the HeartMath Institute, is that the heart and brain are in constant two-way communication. The heart has its own complex network of neurons and sends a continuous stream of information to the brain, influencing attention, emotional regulation and thinking.

When we experience emotions such as appreciation, gratitude, love, compassion or genuine care, the heart’s rhythm can become more ordered and coherent. In this calmer state, it becomes easier to think clearly, see the bigger picture and become aware of intuitive insights, gut feelings, as well as logical reasoning.  It allows us to think outside the box.

Rather than choosing between the head and the heart, our wisest decisions often emerge when the two are working together in harmony.

Why Stress Makes Decisions Harder

Stress is one of the biggest obstacles to good decision making. When we are under pressure, it is easy to become caught in the loop of overthinking and overwhelm.  And every time we delay making a decision, it becomes a micro stress, hanging around in the background, gradually draining mental energy and confidence.

Learning to regulate your emotional state first helps you to make a decision from a place of calmness and balance, rather than fear or urgency.

A Simple Heart-Focused Practice

One of the methods I often share with clients is inspired by the research at HeartMath.

Before making a decision, try the following:

  1. Pause for a moment and allow yourself to become still.  Imagine time stopping for a moment as if you are pressing the pause button.
  2. Drop your attention from the thinking mind down to the area around your heart. Imagine breathing in and out of your heart.
  3. Breathe slowly and comfortably, allowing each breath to flow in and out for around five seconds each way. Do this for around 2 minutes - don't skip this step, 2 minutes of breathing like this can switch your nervous system from stress and urgency to rest and calm.
  4. Recall a person, place or experience that naturally brings a feeling of appreciation, gratitude, love or genuine care. Re-experience this feeling in the present moment, imagine being there, and seeing what you saw, hearing what you heard and feelings those uplifting feelings again.
  5. Stay with that feeling for a minute or two, embodying the feeling in the here and now,  before gently returning your attention to the decision.
  6. Now, ask yourself, what would my heart say? See what comes up – a thought, an image, a knowing, maybe nothing in that moment. Allow any impressions to form as you take your time and open the space for creative imagination.

There is no need to force an answer. Simply notice whether your thinking begins to feel calmer, clearer and more balanced.  Sometimes a decision or a realisation comes when you switch your attention to something else.

Decisions Become Easier with Practice

This simple practice does not remove life’s difficult choices, but it can reduce emotional overwhelm so that both your logical mind and your intuitive wisdom can work together.

Clients often tell me that after taking just a few moments to calm their nervous system, a decision that once felt impossible begins to feel much clearer. They do not necessarily receive a dramatic flash of inspiration. Instead, they notice a quiet sense of certainty beginning to emerge, as something shifts.

For me, when I make a decision that is right for me, I get a fizzy feeling inside, a kind of excitement that bubbles up like Champagne, and it  needs no words. It's a YES from every part of me.   I call it the "Champagne Feeling".   What do you notice? next time you make a decision, become aware of the feeling that accompanies a full-bodied YES and give it a name.

Sometimes the wisest decision is not the one that shouts the loudest, but the one that feels right - calm, steady and aligned with who you truly are.
